1723 VOLTAIRE 1ed La Ligue La Henriade French Henry IV Queen Caroline Mokpap

“Let us read and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world.”

? Voltaire

Henriade is one of Voltaires most famous and important poems. This work concerns and celebrates the life of Henry IV of France. While not tremendously popular during Voltaires lifetime, Henriade has continued to be one of the most popular 18th-century poems on the life of French royalty.

Prior to the release of “Henriade”, Voltaire wrote “La Ligue, ou Henry le Grand”, a poem that would develop into Henriade. However, Voltaire had no intents to write Henriade – he was satisfied with La Ligue, but royal leaders pushed for suppression of this work forcing Voltaire to ultimately remake the work into the much more popular Henriade.

This 1723 true first edition was published by Jean Mokpap (i.e., Viret).
