Throughout the 17th- and 18th-centuries, there was an abundance of French educational societies that were influential both in and outside of France. One of the more remarkable societies was the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, which was best known for its impressive and enormous set of historical articles.

This particular volume from the first edition of ‘Histoire’ is notable for the inclusion of Bonamy’s views on ancient philosophers on the Plurality of Worlds, Valois’s ‘History of the Second Holy War’, as well as accounts from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
