1742 Cryptographia Conradus Du Halde CHINA Gentleman’s Magazine Samuel Johnson
The ‘Gentleman’s Magazine’ was published in London from 1732 through the 1800s. It was the first magazine and was the most popular of the several periodicals in the 1700s that contained current events, science, medicine, discoveries, travel, and foreign affairs.
From 1738 to 1746, Edward Cave published in occasional issues of The Gentleman's Magazine semi-fictionalized accounts of contemporary debates in the two Houses of Parliament under the title of “Debates in the Senate of Lilliput (borrowed from Jonathan Swift’s work, “Gulliver’s Travels). This was done to give genuine reactions to acts of Parliament with anonymity to writers such as William Guthrie (June 1738 – November 1740), Samuel Johnson (November 1740 – February 1743), and John Hawkesworth (February 1743 – December 1746).
