1762 Phaedrus Aesop Fables Greek Literature Stoic Philosophy Morality Sincerum

“Things are not always what they seem; the first appearance deceives many; the intelligence of a few perceives what has been carefully hidden.”

– Phaedrus

Phaedrus was a 1st-century fabulist and Roman poet known for his five books of verse fables. Many of his tales are adaptions of Aesop’s famous tales, but he does include his own new stories as well. One major difference between Aesop and Phaedrus, however, is Phaedrus’s treatment of the moral. Phaedrus emphasized the moral of the story much more than Aesop did.

This edition is the collected works of Phaedrus and Aesopian fables and was edited in German and Latin by Emanuel Sincerum.
