1783 Phaedrus Fables Fontaine Greek Literature Stoic
1783 Phaedrus Fables Fontaine Greek Literature Stoic Philosophy Morality Aesop
“Things are not always what they seem; the first appearance deceives many; the intelligence of a few perceives what has been carefully hidden.”
– Phaedrus
Phaedrus was a 1st-century fabulist and Roman poet known for his five books of verse fables. Many of his tales are adaptions of Aesop’s famous tales, but he does include his own new stories as well. One major difference between Aesop and Phaedrus, however, is Phaedrus’s treatment of the moral. Phaedrus emphasized the moral of the story much more than Aesop did.
This edition is the collected works of Phaedrus edited by Gabriel Brotier who supplemented Phaedrus with fables of Jean de la Fontaine. In addition to the text, many of the fables are supplemented with fine, copper engravings.
