1788 Overall Needlework picture signed and dated.

[ translate ]

This very rare dated 1788 and signed overall needlework picture depicts a bucolic setting with a house, windmill, a man hunting accompanied by a boy. On the right, amongst grazing sheep, a cow, and a lying dog, is a seated shepherdess listening to a man seated on a rock, playing a horn. In the foreground is a duck pond with several ducks some swimming and some on the grass. All in all it portrays a very pleasant scene. The piece is inscribed on the background silk, at the bottom: H Hambbeton finished August 15th 1788. The inscription is very difficult to read but thankfully, early in its history, someone copied the inscription on the backing paper which is still preserved on the back. The frame is not original but the needlework is still mounted on its original stretcher. Silk on silk; 21.5 x 22 inches framed.
