1794 1/2 C, C-4b, MS, BN

[ translate ]

1794 1/2 C Normal Head, Large Edge Letters, C-4b, B-6a, High R.6, AG3 PCGS. Ex: Jon D. Lusk Collection. The population of this edge variant is between eight and 14 examples, depending on the reference consulted. Today, we rate the variety as High R.6 based on "13 or 14 known examples" per Ed Fuhrman. Although the edge variant was discussed in The Numismatist in 1921, modern identification was 50 years ago when W.K. Raymond found an example in October 1973. Since then, advanced half cent collectors have searched for this variant and others among 1794 half cents. The 1794 C-1 half cent is normally found with Large Edge Letters, while C-2 through C-6 are typically Small Edge Letters coins and rarely Large Edge Letters pieces. Populations of the latter include about 35 to 40 examples of C-2b, five or six of C-3b, 13 or 14 of C-4b, three examples of C-5b, and just one of C-6b. Although well worn, the present piece has lovely chestnut-brown color with slight surface roughness that is expected for the grade. Liberty's bust is fully outlined with a complete date and legible LIBERTY. The wreath is outlined with most of the legend and denomination visible. Ex: San Jose Coin Show (1/18/1990); Rod Widok Collection (Goldberg Auctions, 2/2020), lot 414. From The Jon D. Lusk Collection. HID10510052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
