1794 1ed Erasmus of Rotterdam Antipolemus Anti-War Vice
1794 1ed Erasmus of Rotterdam Antipolemus Anti-War Vicesmus Knox Pitt Ireland
An important anti-war treatise written by a Whig apologist at the height of the French Revolution. Vicesimus Knox rediscovered and edited an almost-forgotten work of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam entitled ‘Antipolemus’. This book was originally written to plead with people for peace and to act civilized to one another; however, because much of the content was rewritten, almost verbatim, in the famed ‘Praise of Folly’, ‘Antipolemus’ never gained much readership.
Scholars today believe that Knox’s edition of Erasmus was published to support William Pitt the Younger and his attempts to quell the disputes between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland following the upheavals caused by the French and American Revolutions.
