In 1771, author VJ Peyton published one of the first historical accounts of the English language. ‘Elements of the English Language’ covers all aspects of the English language from aspects of dialogue, familiar phrases, parts of speech, and elements of language that correspond to French. In fact, the work was ultimately designed to make parallels between French and English.

This 1794 edition, published by Carey, includes both French and English languages in parallel as well as phonetic English in the three-column format.
