[ translate ]

[Rare!] COLLECTION OF VARIOUS WEEKLY AND HOLIDAYS SERMONS (MORAL TEACHINGS) IN 3 PARTS.
With blessing of Metropolitan of Karlovac
Wien, 1794
Size 9 by 14 3/4"
3 parts in one volume.
pp. 90, 86, 73
Leather binding.
Missing lower end of the spine.
Dampstain at lower margin. Occasional foxing. Some period marginalia.
A very interesting, extremely rare edition.
Russian sermons in Serbian dialect, first published in Moscow in 1775
Includes the texts of Russian Orthodox preachers Platon Levshin (37 teachings), Gavriil Petrov (8 teachings), as well as sermons by various authors, including Greek, German, and French: John Chrysostom, Ilya Minyatiy, Jacques Soren, etc.
This book has been complied by Metropolitan of Moscow Platon and Metropolitan of St. Petersburg Gavriil by the order of Catherine the Great.
It includes their own sermons, conversations of the Church Fathers and even the teachings of European preachers in Church Slavonic translation.
Such a book allowed every priest, even an illiterate one, to regularly preach and instruct the people, even if they had learned in advance, but with accurate and wise words.
This universal collection drew the attention of the Orthodox of the Balkan region, languishing under the Turkish yoke and deprived of any Orthodox literature.
The Serbian educator Archimandrite John Raich (1726-1801) translated the book into the Serbian dialect of Church Slavonic (its text is easy to read, but it is enriched with some archaic, purely Serbian expressions) and published it in Vienna.
