17TH CENTURY ANTIQUE TURKISH OTTOMAN TEXTILE. 4 ft 2 in x 1 ft 10 in (1.27 m x 0.56 m).

Provenance : Bernheimer, London

The fan-like carnations and tulip design of this velvet were popular motifs for Ottoman textiles and this panel was most likely woven for upholstery. For related examples see, Louise W. Mackie, The Splendor of Turkish Weaving, Washington, D.C.: The Textile Museum, 1973, no. 15; Christian Erber, A Wealth of Silk and Velvet, Bremen, 1993, pls. G10/1 and G10/2; Friedrich Spuhler, Islamic Carpets and Textiles in the Keir Collection, London 1978.

Breathtaking Antique Turkish Ottoman Textile, Country of Origin: Turkey, Circa Date: 1600 – A 17th century antique Ottoman silk and metal-thread Textile voided velvet (catma) panel, Bursa. This antique Turkish textile features an impeccably tiled design of floral shapes, each row offset to nestle midway along the next. The golden cream designs of this remarkable antique Ottoman textile are set off by a red background, which highlights the jagged edges of the main flower’s petals as they unfurl from their central points. These large carnations are nestled over smaller tulips, which themselves are flanked by leafy frond structures. Diminutive bushes rest between the leaves of the smaller flowers, filling the space with their stylized forms. This border-less design fills the body of the textile, drawing the eye with perfect curls and spreading lines.
Size: 4 ft 2 in x 1 ft 10 in (1.27 m x 0.56 m)
