17TH CENTURY ENGLISH CANVASWORK NEEDLEWORK PICTURE, silk, gilt-thread, and seed pearls on linen canvas, completed in fine tent stitches, possibly depicting a Biblical scene, featuring several figures in a pastoral landscape with a central couple standing next to a stream, a boy or man fishing in the lower right corner next to a crane-type bird, and the lower left corner with lounging woman beside a basket, the background including a man walking over a bridge, a woman milking a cow, and buildings in the distance, the initials "G" and "H" completed in pearls, all encompassed by a scrolling and foliate frame border. Housed under glass in an old painted and molded frame. Second half 17th century. 8 1/2" x 6 1/4" sight, 11" x 8 3/4" OA.

Property deaccessioned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, VA. All proceeds to benefit the collection acquisition fund.
Purchased from Gregory & Co., 1936.
Condition Report: Good to very good visual condition with light toning, thread having some scattered losses and typical fugitive color, loss of some pearls mostly in the border, linen along outer edge having holes, repair stitching, and discoloration, frame with some wear, flakes, and chips. Not examined out of frame.
