17TH CENTURY FOLLOWER OF TIZIANO VECELLIO, CALLED TITIAN
DANAË

oil on canvas, unlined
46¾ by 66⅝ in.; 118.7 by 169.2 cm.

Condition Report:
The canvas appears to be thinly lined and is stable on its stretcher. There is a patch on the reverse of the canvas in the upper center to address an old repair in the upper background. The overall image reads clearly beneath an old and yellowed varnish. The paint surface is slightly dirty and there are two tiny but scattered and stable losses in the figure's arm and upper chest. Overall, though, many of the details in the figures remain in good condition, with much of the retouching concentrated in the background. There are a few scattered old repairs in the background including a few thin old repaired tears in the center background, one in the hip of Cupid, and a few in the upper left background. There are scattered small spots of retouching here and there throughout, almost all of which have discolored and are visible to the naked eye. Inspection under UV reveals these aforementioned retouches and repairs, some small scattered spots in the background, and possibly some strengthening to the darker fabric at the reclining figure's feet. The painting is offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
