17TH CENTURY PSKOV SCHOOL ICON

the upper register depicting the Theotokos holding her omophorion [vestment], followed by John the Baptist and John the Apostle and bishops, all blessed by Christ from heaven, the lower register centered with Romanos the Melodist standing on the ambon and holding up a hymn dedicated to the Virgin, which he shows to Tarasios of Constantinople, the visionary Andrew the Fool-for-Christ speaking his disciple Epiphanius in the lower left and describing a vision he had while praying in the Church of Blachernae in Constantinople, represented by the domes visible above the upper register, egg tempera and gesso on wood panel, overlaid with repousse frame adorned with scrolling foliate motifs; dimensions including frame: 28 x 24 cm (11 x 9 1/2 in.)

CONDITION
The icon is in overall stable age-appropriate condition. Very faint vertical crack to the top center. Scattered losses near the figures of Romanos and Andrew the Fool and to the robe of one of the bishops. Losses to the halos of Andrew and Tarasios, to the frame at the upper right and lower left, with some wear to the corners and corrosion to the right side. Insert splint partly loose. Inspection under UV light shows an even layer of varnish.
