17th C. Chinese Wood Carving of a Luohan/Lohan Buddhist Monk. Chinese polychrome wood carving depicting a Luohan seated in a position of ease on a throne. The figure's hands are positioned in Vitarka mudra, with the left hand raised and the right hand resting in his lap. The carving features traces of red, black, and white pigment overall. Circa 17th century, Ming/Qing Dynasty. Likely from Shanxhi, China. Measures approximately 39" x 24" x 27". With characteristic losses and traces of old polychrome as shown in the photos. Retains original invoice and certificate of authenticity from Chine Gallery, Hong Kong, both dated May 16th, 2002. This item originates from the estate of John A. Williams, a distinguished philanthropist and renowned collector. Mr. Williams and his partner Dewitt Hart were influential members of San Francisco's art society and were celebrated for their discerning taste in modern, ethnographic, and fine art. Over the years, they hosted numerous exhibitions in their home, showcasing their prestigious collection to appreciative audiences. All proceeds of items from this estate benefit the Hart Williams Rainbow Fund, a nonprofit working with the LGBTQIA+ community in the San Francisco Bay Area.
