Jan Jansson (also called Jan Janssonius, Johannes Janssonius, and Jan Janszoon, Dutch, 1588-1664). "Le Ducce d'Aiguillon" - copper plate engraving with hand coloring. Published in Amsterdam, ca. 1677. A very nice 'wine map' depicting the Duchy of Aiguillon and depicting significant towns, rivers, fortifications, and vineyards with lovely renderings of mountains, forests, and villages. The Garonne River and its tributaries are prominently delineated, and the map also includes three cartouches. Cherubs holding grape clusters surround the title cartouche at the upper right. Other cherubs adorned with grapevine wreaths and holding wine vessels surround the dedication at the lower left. Finally, a group holding mapmaking instruments is at the lower left. A superb map of the Lot-et-Garonne region of France - well known for the production of Buzet wines! Size of map: 15.875" L x 20" W (40.3 cm x 50.8 cm) Size of sheet: 19.75" L x 23" W (50.2 cm x 58.4 cm)

Jan Jansson came from a reputable family of map publishers active in the Netherlands during the 17th century, and the Jansson heirs would continue to run their printing empire for decades. This map was dedicated to Marie de Vignerot de Pont Courlay, the Duchesse d'Aiguillon (1604-1675) who was the niece of Cardinal Richelieu and was known for her charitable work. Among her many good deeds, she helped St. Vincent de Paul establish a hospital for foundlings and gave 22,000 livres in order to establish a mission for the poor.
