17th C. European Carbon Steel Cabasset Helmet

[ translate ]

Europe, possibly Elizabethan, late 17th century CE. A magnificent carbon steel cabasset helmet, a form that originated in Italy and was created from the early 16th to early 17th centuries. While similar to the Spanish morion helmet in that it has a flat brim and a peaked form, it does not share the crest/comb that adorns the Spanish morion and has a folded edged rim. This example also retains many of its rivets. Akin to its Spanish counterpart, the cabasset was worn by infantry during the pike and shot formations. The cabasset was very popular in 16th century England and was used during the English Civil War (22 August 1642 to 3 September 1651). Also interesting, the Pilgrims took several cabasset helmets to the New World, and one was found on Jamestown Island. This example's light weight indicates that it may have been a guard's helmet as opposed to belonging to a foot soldier who would have needed a more protective helmet. Size: 12.3" L x 9.375" W x 6.375" H (31.2 cm x 23.8 cm x 16.2 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in June 2007; ex-John C. Denner Company, North Lancaster, Ontario, Canada

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
