17th C. European Forged Iron Parrying Dagger

Western Europe, France or Italy, ca. 17th century CE. A large forged-iron parrying dagger with a decorative circular pommel and a rivet tip. A wood handle covers the tang of the blade, and a steel guard flares outward from the handle. Just above the guard is a small inlaid copper cross shape on one side. The long blade has a faint midrib and tapers to a pointed tip. This large dagger was a popular side arm often used in tandem with a longer sword for parrying, and the guard would help protect the hands. Size: 16.75" L x 3.75" W (42.5 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000

Condition Report: Stable fissure to wood handle with nicks and chips. Surface wear and pitting to blade commensurate with age. Nice patina!
