17th C. French Leaded Brass Pricket Candlestick

Western Europe, France, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A fantastic cast leaded-brass pricket candlestick with three legs featuring zoomorphic paw-like legs. The top contains a spike or pricket in the center for holding the candle in place. A flared drip pan with a slightly raised lip surrounds the pricket base and sits atop a baluster-form stem. The wide base consists of a flattened sheet that is molded into a concave, almost roof like profile with upturned tips attached to the abstract, paw-shaped feet. Size: 5.5" W x 10" H (14 cm x 25.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Davis collection, Houston, Texas, acquired before 2013 from various auction houses in London and New York

Condition Report: Chips and nicks to rim of drip pan and the tip of pricket spike. Surface abrasions throughout, but otherwise intact. Earthen and heavy mineral deposits on the base and underside interior.
