17th C. German Iron Torture Device - Pear of Anguish

[ translate ]

Western Europe, Germany, ca. 17th century CE. A rare and macabre example of the infamous torture device known affectionately as the pear of anguish (also choke pear). This forged-iron torture tool consists of a central body with three vertical fins, a trio of cupped 'shells' with protruding central nubbins, a threaded twisting arm with spiraling, goat-like 'horns' above an impressed minimalist skull. The pear of anguish was employed on liars, adulterers, blasphemers, and committers of 'devious' sexual acts. The pear-shaped body would first be inserted into the mouth, vagina, or rectum of the guilty party and gradually opened using the threaded mechanism. Though rarely fatal by itself, this tool was designed to inflict unbearable amounts of pain as well as devastating physical injuries. A truly morbid example covered with fine patina. Size: 2.3" W x 8.25" H (5.8 cm x 21 cm); 3.375" W (8.3 cm) when fully opened.

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in early 2018; ex-private Lonsee, Germany collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

#152077 Dimensions: Condition Report: Slight bending to some shells, central body, interior articulating arm, and horns, with softening to some finer skull details on handle, otherwise intact and excellent.
