17th C. Thai Ayutthaya Gilded Standing Buddha

[ translate ]

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ayutthaya period, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A lovely mold-cast brass figure depicting Buddha standing with delineated legs atop a petite plinth with a lower tang. Buddha wears a knee-length skirt with a frontal belt and sash, an intricate necklace with a huge crescent-shaped pectoral, incised arm and wrist bands, and a flowing cloak. He holds his hands in the abhaya mudra gesture of fearlessness and reassurance. His serene visage is defined by downturned almond-shaped eyes, a crested nose above full lips, slender cheeks, and tall ears decorated with conical earrings, all beneath an incised crown and a tiered flaming ushnisha. Fine traces of gilding (2% gold) are visible across the surfaces and provide a wonderful chromatic complementarity to the lustrous green and brown patina. Size: 1.8" L x 3.375" W x 8.625" H (4.6 cm x 8.6 cm x 21.9 cm); 10.125" H (25.7 cm) on included custom stand; quality of gilding: 2%.

Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection
