17th C. Turkish Bronze Mortar w/ Ribbed Surface

Near East, Turkey, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A cast-bronze mortar with a squat discoid base, a spherical body which tapers lightly near the shoulder, a corseted neck, and a flared rim surrounding a deep interior cavity. The body is accentuated with twelve fin-shaped ribs that course around the midsection. Fine green and russet patina has formed across most surfaces, and scattered abrasions reveal the original golden-brown bronze color beneath. Size: 4.125" W x 3.375" H (10.5 cm x 8.6 cm).

Condition Report: Repair to rim with small chips along break lines. Minor nicks and abrasions to most fins, base, and rim, with light encrustations. Light earthen deposits as well as nice green and russet patina.
