17th C. Venetian Glass Devotional Flask - St. Nicholas
Western Europe, northeastern Italy, Venice, ca. 17th century CE. A stunning glass devotional flask for holy water cold-painted with the image of St. Nicholas of Bari in bishop's garments in hues of blue, red, tan, peach, black, and gold. The beautiful vessel presents a flattened body and a teardrop shape with a narrow neck and flared rim. The Saint is shown from the waist up with a prominent red halo and is contained by an ovoid border of gold curls. An applied wavy band of glass adorns the neck of the vessel, while a tooled thread travels down each side of the body. A gorgeous example from Baroque Venice! Size: 4.625" W x 6.5" H (11.7 cm x 16.5 cm); 6.625" H (16.8 cm) on included custom stand.
A pair of remarkably similar flasks can be found at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York under accession numbers 51.3.238 and 2009.3.93.
