[ translate ]

Early German or Flemish School painting, The Gold Counter. Oil on wood panel. 17th Century or earlier. No visible signature on the front. Indistinct writing on the back of the panel which appears to be a name and date (possibly “1664”). Frame with old shipping label reading “Munchen”. Mounted in a 19th century ornate gold painted frame. Unusual and strong subject matter with symbolic interest. The sitter is likely a man, a money-lender. Unattributed to a specific artist.

PAINTING: 8.75” x 10.75” (22.5 cm x 27.5 cm)

FRAME: 13.5” x 15.5” (34.5 cm x 39.5 cm)

PROVENANCE: San Francisco, California estate.

Condition Report: Wood panel support is slightly, but evenly, warped, bowed outward, side to side. The surface of the painting is good condition. Examination under ultra-violet light shows little or no restoration. Several tiny losses to painted surface. No crazing. Thin surface split line to the wood support, on the front, on the left side, with slight separation of the paint in that area (slight and hard to see in the photographs). Frame with small losses, some small repairs and touch-ups.
