Southern Chinese, likely Canton, Qing Dynasty. Important Qianlong to Daoguang period, large eight-panel polychrome wallpaper screen depicting figures in a landscaped village engaged in various activities; the verso depicting birds and flowers in tones of greens. Unmarked. Approx. h. 97", total w. 184" (each 23"). Note: Examples of the use of such "India" papers can be found in the China Trade Room at "Beauport", Gloucester, MA and Winterthur Museum, Winterthur, DE.
Condition Report: Screen is composed of multiple panels of paper and cut-out fragments made to fit or fill an area; has been laid down on canvas; multiple tears with backing showing, losses and water stains with darkening to surface; overall pleasing appearance.
