MICHAEL ULSHOEFFER (1793-1881). Lawyer, Politician, First Judge of the New York Common Pleas.
March 28, 1821-Dated, Autograph Letter Signed, "M: Ulshoeffer", 7.75" x 10.75", 2 pages, with Integral Transmittal Envelope, Albany, (NY), Very Good. Overall even toning, losses to the left corners and small wax seal tear at center right, written in medium brown ink on wove period paper and soiling. Writing to Ogden Edwards (1781-1862), jurist and legislator Member of the N.Y. State constitutional convention (1821). This Letter reads, in part: "Swartmont's bank bill has passed! The militia law has passed our house, and will pass the Senate. Today we passed the Battery tax law as you sent it... Alex. Hamilton tells me that Mr. Verplank is to go to Congress from the Upper District. Why not take John J. Morgan, Preston Sharpe, Wendover, or some other good Republicans...". Includes a full page transcription.
Michael Ulshoeffer (March 30, 1793"September 6, 1881) was a New York City lawyer, politician and judge. Ulshoeffer studied law and was admitted to the bar of his native city in 1813. For six years he was a member of the New York State Assembly, being the champion of a bill to revise the state constitution, writing a reply to Chancellor Kent's opinion disapproving the measure.
He became corporation attorney, and later corporation counsel, occupying the latter office for four years. In 1834 Ulshoeffer was appointed judge of the court of common pleas, reappointed in 1843, and was elected a member of that bench in 1846 under the new constitution. At the expiration of his term Ulshoeffer did not resume practice, but was frequently selected as an arbitrator and referee.
