1834 Pacific Voyages D’Urville Australia Magellan Cook Anson Vancouver MAPS

Jules Dumont D’Urville was a 19th-century French explorer who is best known for his voyages in the South Pacific and Antarctica. He was responsible for naming several new species of plants, as well as creating maps of islands he explored.

The complete works of D’Urville’s voyages were published in various languages following his death, including this French edition. This set is beautifully illustrated with views of plants, landscapes, native people to New Zealand and Tasmania, animals, shipwrecks, Tahitian tribal dances, Asian architecture and ruins, as well as a folding map of the World and of the Pacific Ocean.

Hill says of this work:

The intent of the voyage “was to gain additional information about the principal groups of islands in the Pacific and to augment the mass of scientific data acquired by Louis Duperrey. …Huge amounts of scientific materials were collected and published”
