1836 Cuvier Animal Kingdom Fossils Paleontology Illustrated Birds Ethnography

Often called ‘The Father of Paleontology,’ Georges Cuvier was a French zoologist remembered for his plethora of essays and writings, most importantly ‘Le Regne Animal,’ or ‘The Animal Kingdom.’ First appearing in 1817, this book was a culmination of Cuvier’s life’s research on living and fossil animals as well as insects. This work is unique in that many similar anthologies writing during this time period were composed by multiple authors. ‘The Animal Kingdom’ was solely by Cuvier, though it was translated into English by others.

Cuvier’s work played an important role in identifying whether or not animals were truly extinct. (Waggoner). This book illustrates many of those animals, both living and extinct, with hundreds of illustrations over the course of the set. The section on mammals is particularly fascinating as it covers humankind – early humans, Africans, Native American tribes, and many more.

According to Lowndes,

“A work no less distinguished for its scientific accuracy than for it interesting details of the habits of animals.”
