1839/8 $10 Large Letters, Head of 1838, MS60 NGC. This example shows an early die state with traces of the underdigit 8 seen at the outer curve of 9. The Large Letters, Head of 1838 shows Liberty's portrait angled to the left and a pronounced curve in the neck truncation, soon modified and replaced by the rare 1839 Small Letters variant, which displays a revised Liberty Head portrait (type of 1840) and the reverse legend only nominally smaller than the Large Letters type. This Head of 1838 example is one of the few Mint State survivors from the 25,801-piece mintage. Light orange-gold color reveals a sharp strike and only minor abrasions.
