Joseph Coe (1784–1854) was a leader of the Latter-Day Saint movement from 1831 to 1838. He became a one of the twelve inaugural members of the presiding high council in Kirtland as a high priest ordained by Joseph Smith. However, he was excommunicated in 1838 after the collapse of the Kirtland Safety Society.

This 1840 edition of Joseph Coe’s work ‘The True American’ was intended to guide the minds of the young men of America towards the political endeavors of the LDS movement.
