Patrick Henry is one of the most famous early American founding fathers, most known for his declaration at the Virginia Convention of “Give me liberty, or, give me death!” William Wirt was Henry’s first biographer, and in 1805, began working on the very first life of Patrick Henry. Wirt included several transcripts of Henry’s speeches and was in direct correspondence with men who were closely tied to Henry. According to the DAB,
“[this] work was acquired largely from men who had known Henry and it was presented in a laudatory and ornate manner.”
