1844 Siege of Gibraltar American Revolution SPAIN France Drinkwater MAP History

In 1779, during the American Revolutionary War, French and Spanish forces attempted to capture and hold Gibraltar, which had been controlled by Great Britain. This siege, which ultimately lasted for more than three years, proved to be ineffective as Spain continually failed to gain a stronghold in Gibraltar. Author John Drinkwater wrote a thorough history of the Great Siege, which was first published shortly after the end of the Revolutionary War.
