1845 Quincy Illinois Sampler by E.N. Berryman

[ translate ]

A very unusual American Needlework Sampler by E. N. Berryman, Quincy, Illinois, dated March, 1845. That sampler is wool on linen and stitched in a very unusual color combination for a sampler: tans (light and dark), orange (or pink – not sure which) and black. In addition to 4 alphabets and the numbers from 1-10, the sampler includes a Biblical verse (“Let Patience have her perfect work that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” (James 1, 4-8 in the King James Bible), and to vignettes of birds (one would assume Prairie birds. It measures 17” x 14 ½” (sight) and is framed in a very nice, contemporary frame 19 ¼” x 16 ¼”. This sampler is very sophisticated: the use of color, the saw-tooth border, the alternating light and darker tan background and the birds, etc. It leads me to think that E. N. Berryman was not a young schoolgirl when she made this sampler, but possibly a teenager or perhaps a young woman. The stitching is even and complete and the letters are uniform in size, for each alphabet. 1845 is very early for a “frontier” sampler. Quincy, which sits on the Mississippi, was a thriving hub for steamboats and paddle wheelers plowing the river, and it served as a major stop for runaway slaves on the underground railroad. The sampler is in fine condition with no missing stitches, soling, etc. There are a few small patches in the foundation, but they are not noticeable now (when I got the sampler, it was unframed, so I was able to see them). The sampler is archivally framed with acid-free backing and conservation glass.
