Roger Williams was a 17th-century Puritan who is best-known for his role in the colonization of Rhode Island. Even though he was later pushed out of Puritan circles, his religious influence lasted through the end of his life. In 1638 he founded the first Baptist church in America and helped reach Native American Indians, especially those whose land was illegitimately taken from them.

Author William Gammell published an important biographical sketch of Williams in 1846.
