1847 English Needlework Sampler in Mahogany Frame
This 1847 folk art cross-stich, or needlepoint embroidered sampler is signed by Sarah Atkins, aged 14 years, of the Goodnestone School in England. It depicts upper and lower case alphabet letters along the top, along with numbers, a vine and floral border, crowns and flowering plants, and a verse: "You whose fond wishes do to heaven aspire, who make those blest abodes your sole desire, if you are wise and hope that bliss to gain use well your time live not an hour in vain. Let not the morrow your vain thoughts employ but think this day the last you shall enjoy." The piece is framed, and measures 17.5" tall X 16.5" across.
