1850 Voyages Rio de Janeiro 1ed Slave Trade California Lima Fremont Deck & Port

“Deck and Port” by Rev. Walter Colton chronicles the intriguing journey aboard the U.S. frigate “Congress” beginning in Norfolk and culminating in Monterey, California. Through Coltons journal-style narrative, readers are transported beyond maritime life to the vibrant cultures, landscapes, and politics of stops that include Rio de Janeiro, Valparaiso, Lima, Honolulu, and gold-rush San Francisco. Interestingly, Colton describes botanical and scientific discoveries near the equator, including animals and weather phenomena. Notably, he includes his perspective on the treatment of slaves and slave-trading in Brazil. He also encounters religious ceremonies and rites, Indian doctors, ghost ships, and many more oddities. Colton also details the arrival of John C. Fremont following the notable Bear Flag event in Sonoma. Melding the wonders and perils of 19th-century sea life with keen observations of distant lands, the book serves as both a captivating travelogue as well as a window into a bygone era.
