1855 18 karat yellow gold Yale University DeForest Prize, the circular medal bears a scripted inscription on the front reading: "DeForest Prize/English Composition & Elocution/Yale College/Senior Class" the verso reading: "Awarded to Alexander McDonald Lyon/A.D.1855"; executed in 18 karat yellow gold; comes in a velvet lined presentation box, total approx. gold weight 113.07 grams Note: The DeForest Prize was founded in 1823 by David C. DeForest, and consisted of a medal equal to the value of one hundred dollars and was awarded "to that scholar of the senior class who shall write and pronounce an English Oration in the best manner,".
