1856 FRANKLIN PIERCE / JEFFERSON DAVIS COMMISSION TO

Matted and framed vellum document measuring 12" x 16-1/2" appointing George W. Custis Lee a Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. Signed by President Franklin Pierce , countersigned by Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, dated 29 May, 1856. Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) was the 14th President of the United States (1853–1857). Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) served as the President of the Confederate States (1861-1865). George Washington Custis Lee (1832-1913) was the eldest son of Robert E Lee. He served as a Confederate general in the Civil War, primarily as an aide-de-camp to Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and succeeded his father as president of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Framed with copies of photographs of Franklin Pierce, Jefferson Davis, and Robert E Lee with two of his sons. CONDITION: Document exhibits folds and light toning with clear writing and signatures. DG Condition: Dimensions: 12" x 16 - 1/2".
