Richard Lander was an English explorer who made his name for his voyages into Africa. After nearly a decade of African voyages, the British government sent Richard and his brother John in 1830 to explore the Niger River. While at the river delta, they were captured by local tribes for a short time. Their voyage did yield grand results – they discovered the Niger River course and outlets.

The specifics of the journey were written and published under the title ‘Journal of an Expedition to Explore the Course and Termination of the Niger’. This work is a fascinating account of African culture, geography, and 19th-century exploration. This 1858 two-volume set includes maps of the Quorra (river), portraits of the Landers, and views of canoes.
