1859 Island World of the Pacific Inspiration MOBY DICK
1859 Island World of the Pacific Cheever Inspiration for MOBY DICK Illustrated
Melville Henry Cheever was a 19th-century American author who is often considered one of the best writers of sea adventure literature including “The Island World of the Pacific”. While the contents of this book themselves are notable, the second chapter is without question the most important. Cheever describes the excitement of whale hunting, which inspired author Herman Melville to write his famed book Moby-Dick. Melville transformed this chapter on natural history into his landmark novel, drawing almost the entire substance of his note from Cheever’s chapter: the Cape Horn setting, the rough winds, the method of capturing (Bousquet).
