1860 Carvalho Fremont Expedition Mormon Utah Voyages Travel & Adventure

Solomon Carvalho was an artist who is best remembered for his role on the Fremont Expedition in 1853. In search for railroad routes through the Rocky Mountains, Carvalho kept a log of his adventures which were printed in his book ‘Incidents of Travel’. According to Wagner-Camp,

“Carvalho was an artist accompanying John C. Fremont's expedition of 1853 to explore the Rockies for a possible railroad route. He left New York in September 1853 and arrived in Parowan, Utah Territory in 1854. There the party split up and Carvalho took a southern route, reaching Los Angeles by way of Cajon Pass and San Bernardino on June 9.”

This work also includes a section devoted entirely to Mormonism, covering notable Mormon sermons, polygamy, and speeches by Brigham Young.

John H. Oliver, Lowell, Mass., Nov. 1877

John Oliver was a Union soldier in the American Civil War who served in Company I of the 6th Massachusetts Regiment, Minute Men of ’61.

The 6th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Militia was a peacetime infantry regiment that was activated for federal service in the Union army for three separate terms during the American Civil War. The regiment gained notoriety as the first unit in the Union army to suffer fatal casualties in action during the Civil War in the Baltimore Riot and the first militia unit to arrive in Washington D.C. in response to President Abraham Lincoln's initial call for 75,000 troops. Private Luther C. Ladd of the 6th Massachusetts is often referred to as the first Union soldier killed in action during the war.

In the years immediately preceding the war and during its first enlistment, the regiment consisted primarily of companies from Middlesex County. During its first term of service, four out of ten companies of the regiment were from Lowell, Massachusetts.
