1860 SLAVERY Impending Crisis of the South Helper
1860 SLAVERY Impending Crisis of the South Helper Abolitionist RACISM Civil War
Abolitionists are the only true friends of the South; slaveholders and slave-breeders are downright enemies of their own section.
– Hinton Helper
The Impending Crisis of the South (1857) was one of the most important pre-Civil War, anti-slavery books. Curiously, this work was written by Southern author Hinton Rowan Helper who advocated for the abolishment of slavery from an economic standpoint. He proposed alternatives to slavery that were specifically designed to appeal to wealthy white non-slave owners. It brought so much dissention in the South that it was banned!
Per Larned on this work:
This book created a tremendous sensation. Its thesis is that slavery has ruined the South, in the interests of the slaveholders at the expense of the non-slaveholders. This is established by statistics illustration southern inferiority as compared with the North. The book is written in the most violent anti-slavery temper.
Howes notes:
Voicing the conclusion that slavery was economically unsound, this work of a southern poor white, officially banned in the South, vied in popularity with the sentimental Uncle Toms Cabin.
From the DAB:
The book caused a greater sensation than Uncle Toms Cabin and was a powerful contributing cause of the Civil War.
