1863 Civil War Naval Discharge, Nantucket, MA. This document, dated 3 August 1863, certified that "Benjamin A. Barnard, a Seaman, has this day been discharged from the U.S. Receiving Ship North Carolina and from naval service." It is signed by Paymaster William G. Marcy and ? Hawley for Captain Meade. On the reverse side of the document Benjamin A. Barnard is noted as having enlisted on August 20th, 1862 for a Year , with Rating as Seaman, from Nantucket, age 24, with hazel eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, and 5'6" tall. Benjamin Avery Barnard was born on Nantucket on October 5, 1839, the son of Jonathan Barnard and his wife Lydia. Before enlisting in the US Navy, he had prior experience at sea, and served on the Town of Nantucket's Militia Company. He married Maria J. Gibbs of Wareham, MA, where he later resided, and died there on 9 August 1895. He is buried at the Agawam Cemetery in Wareham. Document is matted and framed under glass, measuring 8.5"H X 14.75" W.
