HANNIBAL HAMLIN (1809-1891). 15th Vice President of the United States (1861"1865), serving under President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War as the First Vice President from the Republican Party, Hamlin served in the United States Senate, the House of Representatives and as the 26th Governor of Maine.
November 28, 1863-Dated Civil War Period, Autograph Letter Signed, "H Hamlin" as Vice President, measuring 5" x 8", 1 page, Bangor (Maine), Crisp Very Fine. Here, Vice President Hamlin writes to Naval Commander J. B. Montgomery concerning a potential recruit, reading in part:
"H. Hamlin - Vice President of the U.S. -- Bangor Nov 28 '63 -- Com. J. B. Montgomery -- Dear Sir --- This note will introduce to you Mr. Geo R. Bakeman who has been ordered to report to you for examination for acting Master Mate. He is not yet fully recovered from wounds rec'd in the service, but I feel confident a very short time will fully restore him. I trust it will in no way effect his examination."
George Bakeman enlisted in the 22nd Maine and was hospitalized for wounds received on Mar. 26, 1863. This letter even and clean in appearance, nicely headed with title: "H. Hamlin - Vice President of the U.S."
