1865 1ed Civil War SLAVERY Vicksburg Confederacy Knox
1865 1ed Civil War SLAVERY Vicksburg Confederacy Knox Campfire & Cotton-field
Thomas Knox was a 19th-century American author who is best known for his works on the Civil War. Curiously, Knox was from the North, but vehemently attacked Northern soldiers and officers, including General Sherman. One of his more important works was ‘Camp-fire and Cotton-field’ – a work describing Union troops in the South and the Mississippi River basin. But perhaps the most important part of this work is Knox’s description of slavery.
Other topics include details of Civil War battles such as Willow Creek, Battle of Memphis, Vicksburg, and Battle of Corinth, as well as notes on cotton plantations and slaves.
According to Nevins, this work is
“a superb documentary on the Mississippi theater by a newspaper correspondent who seemed to stay ‘in hot water’ with most Federal commanders.”
