1865 State of VIRGINIA Jones Colonial America INDIANS Negroes Slaves #28/50
1865 State of VIRGINIA Jones Colonial America INDIANS Negroes Slaves #28/50
Hugh Jones was an 18th-century American historian best known for his historical perspectives on the many of the original colonies. His best and most important work was his Present State of Virginia. First published in 1724, this work was written with the intents of describing the influences of British colonists, negroes and slaves, and Native American Indian tribes. Notably, Jones describes the planting and harvest management of Indian crops such as corn and tobacco. One particularly curious inclusion in this work is Jones explanation of children born to negroes and white colonists calling them molattoes as well as describing negro and Indian offspring as mustees.
According to Coit Tyler in Larned,
“[Joness] book is one of solid facts and solid suggestions, written in a plan, positive style, just sufficiently tinctured with the gentlemanly egotism of a Virginian and a churchman.”
Howes call this work: “Interesting and highly important”.
