Frank Carpenter (1830-1900) was the American painter best remembered for his painting "First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lincoln." ‘Six Months at the White House’ is Carpenter’s account of his experiences at the White House learning politics and his experiences in particular with Abraham Lincoln. Larned says,

“Of all the collections of anecdotes and reminiscences of President Lincoln, this book of 350 pages, though not the largest, is the best.”

This 1867 early edition contains famous trivia including,

“Lincoln’s fondness for certain poems, the relations among Lincoln’s inner circle (including Mary Todd), behavioral aspects of cabinet members, seemingly endless crowds of favor seekers crowding the Executive Mansion hallways, and Lincoln’s own recollection of his decision to emancipate the salves”
