1867 Lancashire English Folklore Occult Pagan
1867 Lancashire English Folklore Occult Pagan Superstitions Narrative Literature
John Roby (1793–1850) was an English banker, poet, and writer. Roby’s book ‘The Traditions of Lancashire’ was an influential, two-volume study on English folklore. The book was a success with the upper classes, and was reprinted within a year. Nevertheless, readers did not believe that a banker could have written the books, and speculation named several others as the real author. Roby sided with the Romanticists and saw folklore as defective and lowly. He collected folk stories and rewrote them into coherent tales in a more refined style. Roby's works were celebrated in their time, and later folklorists referred to them until the 1870s.
