1867 Nast Swingin Round the Cirkle Slavery Racism Political Satire Illustrated

Called the "Father of the American Cartoon," Thomas Nast (1840-1902) was an influential caricaturist and political cartoonist. Remembered for his Civil War illustrations in Harper's Weekly, Nast's political cartoons were also instrumental in the downfall of Boss Tweed and the election of President Ulysses S. Grant. He solidified America's picture of Santa Claus by portraying him as a round, twinkly, elfin figure. Nast also popularized the donkey as a symbol representing the Democratic Party and the elephant as a Republican Party symbol.

David Ross Locke (1833-1888), who also wrote under the pseudonym Petroleum V. Nasby, was an American journalist and early political commentator during the American Civil War. Locke was in Bucyrus, when the Civil War broke out. He is most famous for the "Nasby Letters. " Written in the semi-literate spelling used by other humorists of the time, they were intended to rally support for the Union cause.

This 1867 first edition book ‘Swingin round the Cirkle’ is a satirical commentary on President Andrew Johnson’s disastrous speaking campaign from August 27 to September 15, 1866, where Johnson lost most of his support which eventually led to his impeachment in 1868. Though satirical, this spoof contains racist and stereotypical condescending attitudes towards blacks in America. It includes 8 full page illustrations by Thomas Nast!
