1877 - 1879 Ordnance Survey Map - Swansea Town - Glamorganshire Sheet XXIV. 1.14. - White Rock Works & Tip, Hafod Works.

This lot comprises a single large-scale industrial town plan of Swansea, Wales, published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, in 1879. The sheet is a zincographed print on heavy paper, which appears to be backed with a fine-weave linen support. This plan is drawn to a scale of 1:500, noted as 10.56 feet to one statute mile or 41.66 feet to one inch.

The map provides an exceptionally detailed record of the industrial landscape along the River Tawe during the peak of the copper smelting era. Notable features depicted include the Middle Bank Works, White Rock Works, and Hafod Works, with specific labels for lead, silver, and copper production. The plan illustrates a complex network of infrastructure including the Midland Railway Swansea Vale Section, various turntables, engine houses, tanks, and Smith's Towing Path. A distinctive radial pattern of spoil heaps is identified as the White Rock Tips.

The lower margin contains a series of imprints and survey details. The central imprint reads 'Zincographed and Published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton. 1879.' and notes that altitudes refer to the approximate mean water at Liverpool. The bottom left corner states the area was 'Surveyed in 1878' and 'Re-zincographed and printed in 1886'. The bottom left also identifies the administrative wards and parishes: North Ward, Swansea HP, St John PH, Llangyfelach HP, Llansamlet PH, East Ward, and Llansamlet Lower TP. A large numeral '33' is written in red ink in the lower left corner.

More Information

The map shows significant signs of age and industrial use (photo 1). The paper is toned overall with widespread foxing and brown spotting across the sheet. There are heavy vertical creases and undulations throughout, consistent with being stored rolled or folded. The edges of the linen backing are frayed, and there are small tears and nicks to the margins, particularly at the corners (photo 3). Surface dirt and some damp staining are visible, most notably on the right-hand side of the sheet (photo 7).
